Brighter Lamp

Brighter built a 60,000-lumen floor lamp and launched it on Indiegogo. The people buying it already run Apple Home and Alexa. A lamp that needs its own app doesn’t survive that market, so it had to join Matter without Brighter burning a year learning the spec.

We wrote the firmware, bare hardware through certification: Color Temperature Light (0x010C) over Wi-Fi.

The hard parts were the encoder and the dimming.

The rotary encoder sets the brightness. At 60,000 lumens, one missed pulse is a visible jump in brightness. The encoder’s contacts bounce, and that bounce looks exactly like a real pulse. Polling faster won’t help; you have to reject the noise without losing the signal. We built an interrupt-driven counter with debounce tuned to that encoder’s bounce. It tracks position, no dropped steps.

Dimming was worse. The PWM frequency sits between two failures. Too slow and the light flickers, and at 60,000 lumens a flicker is visible across the room. Too fast and the LED driver overheats. We moved the frequency until the driver stayed cool and the light stayed steady across the full 2200K to 6500K range.
